In December of 2009, I had the honor of visiting the skimboarding capital of the Philippines, Tanauan, Leyte, for their 6th National Skim Open. I was invited by the Municipal Mayor, Roque A. Tiu, and welcomed by the whole town with open arms. Since the event lasted for three days, I was able to initiate a Beach Cleanup two mornings in a row, free a captive sea turtle, and inspire my people to respect their environment. The memories I shared and the friends I made during this trip will forever be special to me.
My heart dropped, on November 8th, the moment I heard of Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) hitting the province of Leyte the worst. I thought of all of my friends and right away prayed for their safety. I thought of Bantay Dagat, the beach we cleaned up and played on. I thought of how powerful Mother Nature is. I thought of raising money to help my people restore their community.
