Cabo 2014 // Day Two and Three

[threecol_one]

This 2014 edition of the Cabo Classico kept dealing when we woke up and were greeted with pumping waves and glassy conditions. The night before went a little longer than expected so the early morning session was the perfect way to shake off the late night. While the warm crystal clear water gave us the sense of comfort in the heaving shore break, guys were going for broke, throwing themselves over ledges directly onto the sand. The session wrapped up and we decided to walk south and found a solid sider pushing off the rocks with no one around.

The boys traded waves for an hour as we had to pack it up and make it to the riders meeting.

At the riders meeting we found that heats would start running at Solmar this morning at seven AM. The first round of the pros started in classic Cabo shore break, with

all of Victorias’s riders advancing to round 2 tomorrow.

The mornings have been the cleanest so we are expecting another restart bright early Saturday Morning. The word is Cabo sunsets and evening glass offs are something everyone should experience in their lives, and

Cabo 2014 is living up to the hype.

Cabo 2014 // Day One

[threecol_one]

The day started early with a 6:30am flight out of John Wayne Airport, arriving in Cabo around noon. After landing and grabbing the bags, I waited a few hours for the rest of the crew to trickle in. I could sense an elevated mood as warm water heaving barrels and ice cold beer poolside was weighing heavy on everyone’s mind.

After hooking up with Teddy Vlasis, Morgan Just, Max Bourne and Johnny Salta, we grabbed a shuttle into town, watching sets explode on the sand the entire ride.

Being my maiden voyage to Cabo I was skeptical to everyone’s warnings of how heavy the waves get…

I was wrong. The slope at Solmar rivals any Laguna skim spot in its prime, and the five to six foot sets were detonating right on the sand. We also heard from Chimmy and his brother that the Solmar Sider was going off. From outside the hotel we could see guys pulling into death pits on the south side of Solmar next to the rocks, and we didn’t waste any time sprinting down there in hopes of getting a few before dark. We had a solid warm up for the week to come, with

Max Bourne pulling into a healthy connection and getting pitched onto the sand,

Max Bourne Cabo 2014

coming up the slope a little dazed. Writing this I can hear the sets rolling in from my room, and tomorrow looks like the conditions could line up for an epic Solamr Sider session. The riders meeting tomorrow night will also determine if the contest will be held in sidering conditions, or straight wraps.

We will keep you updated.

Victoria’s long time engineer Bob Phillips heart translpant

Bob Phillips heart transplant
Bob Phillips few days before the heart transplant

Last week Bob Phillips finally got that heart he was waiting for. It was an 8.5 hour surgery, and it can run up to 14 hours. So things went well in surgery is my guess.

Unbelievable,  amazing,  and miraculous are the most often heard words about it. This Sunday he was sitting up,  but struggling with the after effects of his massive surgery. He had even been walking the day before that.   Every day will see big improvements, but meanwhile he has to suffer through a very painful recovery and challenging immunosupressing drug regime.

He should be a few more days or a week in intensive care, then he can slide into a less hectic hospital room. Amazing doctors up there at USC Keck Medical Center,  and great staff. Thank you for saving our man Bob. And thank you, thank you whoever out there donated his body to save others.

Keep him in your prayers everybody,

Tex

Jared Green, Zack Henderson and Connor Brashier win GEAA

[twocol_one]

On Saturday April 19th local skimboarderes of all skill levels joined at West Street Beach in Laguna Beach for the last of 3 Green Eggs and Am competitions. Skimmers and fans alike were glad to see that the waves were glassy and of decent size. Unlike the previous two contests, the West Street contests provided the riders with a variety of options when it came time compete. Not only were there wraps like Aliso and Balboa but there was also a sider which was strong enough to produce a secondary sider.  This allowed the riders of each heat to have more options which led to quite a show. Conditions continued to remain strong even through the rising tide. As the heats proceeded skimmers gathered around the score board anticipating what place they got. Those that scored high had a smile on their face and those that did not do as good as they wanted knew they had a second chance because the second of 2 rounds was about to start.

As the round 2 heats went on the crowd and participants were pleasantly surprised by some whale visitors. Pushing the boundaries and coming as near as 50 yards from the shore, the crowd was mesmerized as if they were watching a sea world performance.  Never the less the festivities went on.  As round 2 neared its end conditions started to taper off and those who knew they were moving on knew they were up for a challenge. Paulo and Steve decided to add a semi- final round for the advanced division because of the amount of people and to go straight to finals for the beginner and intermediate divisions. First, came the beginner finals where Zach Henderson took the win by being the only one in his heat to connect a huge sider.  Next, came the intermediate finals where Connor Brashier took the win by charging hard and pulling into some frothing barrels.

Finally it was time for the last heat of the day, the advanced finals. The heat was stacked with Sean Malek, Jared Green, Derek Ledesma, and Grant Nobel.  As the heat got started the waves started to pick up, set after set was rolling through and the riders didn’t let a single one slip by. Sean Malek was on the sider and secondary with Derek Ledesma while Jared Green and Grant Nobel took on the wraps. In the end Jared Green took 1st place, Sean Malek took 2nd, Grant Nobel took 3rd, and Derek Ledesma took 4th. As the day came to an end everyone gathered around for the award ceremony where Connor Brashier was crowned the overall winner of all 3 contests of the Green Eggs and Am for the intermediate division. None of this could have been possible without Steve Taylor and Paulo Prietto who put these contest together every year. We are grateful to have them as a part of our skim community and if you see them out skimming be sure to thank them for all they do.

R.I.P Hobie Alter, Victoria Skimboards very first customer by Tex Haines

HOBIE-ALTER.jpg

Hobie Alter has passed away and we are all the poorer for it.

Victoria Skimboards’  first customer was Hobie Sports in Dana Point.

ALL my life I had been going there with my family on our way to San Onofre.  The smell of resin was fresh, foam was on the floor, and the boards were treasures we drooled over.

We always bought from the used section,  as we were a large family.  My mom had grown up in Hawaii,  surfing with Duke as a young girl hanging out at the Outrigger Club. My dad, as a teenager,  had seen the Duke after the ’32 Olympics in LA,  when after a swim meet, the Duke had sauntered back out from the locker rooms with a surfboard under his arm that he threw into the pool.   My dad was hooked as was the entire stadium that collectively sucked in all the air.   He said you could hear it.  He started cruising to San O as a very young man.

So, my acquaintance with Hobie Sports began very young.

I was first exposed to skimboarding,  at Victoria Beach back about 1960. My parents decided to share an apartment with some other families,  so we could surf San O without having to make the long drive from Pasadena each time.   Having exited college,  and bailing out on becoming a veterinarian,  I was now employed in construction and painting,  and ended up working at Rainbow sandals with Peter Prietto,  one of my oldest friends from the Victoria Beach crew.   After a year of sandal glueing and sanding,  Peter and I decided to make good on our teenage talk of building skimboards.   We bought a couple sheets of plywood from Laguna Lumber,  downtown on Forest opposite City Hall.   We drove up to Costa Mesa to Crystaliner to buy resin and fiberglass and then we commenced to building boards in Peter’s apartment living room in N. Laguna, which was carpeted!  The fumes drove the tenant out into the street screaming at us.  We quickly moved on.

Having built a half a dozen wood boards,  we trucked on down to Hobie’s shop in Dana Point,  where the manager ? promptly took them from us and asked us to return in a few weeks to see about a reorder.   We were in!  We were started!  We had Hobie Sports as our first base and the world was looking pretty good.

Thank you Hobie for all the great things you invented.   You made life so much more fun for so many people,  that I am sure St Peter is waving you thru the door.

Surfboards,  catamarans,  Hobie Hawk gliders,  monohull sail and power boats, pedal powered kayaks for fishing,  and the list goes on and on,  as will your name and our memory.

Thank you Hobie, for giving Victoria Skimboards a start.   Kids,  of all ages,  are sliding into shorebreak, or off of rails on the inland waterways,  or skimming behind boats and kites,  in at least 23 countries around the world.

Max Bourne wins the 2nd Stop of the Green Eggs and Am

CONGRATULATIONS MAX BOURNE

On Sunday April 9th all of the local amateur skimboarders gathered at Aliso Creek for the second stop of the green eggs and am. Skimmers started to show up as early as 7:30 in perpetration for the competition and  were presently surprised by some firing waves. In all the competitions I have skimmed, the conditions of this competition ranked among the best. A combination of a strong 2-3 foot ground swell, no wind, and the waves breaking the perfect distance from shore gave this competition a fair playing field. As 9 o’clock rolled around the heats started and the crowds were stoked to say the least. As the day came to an end team rider Max Bourne was at the top of the podium for the advanced division. This puts him in a slight point lead for the overall title. It all comes down to the West St. Competition where a winner will be crowned.
