Mt. Baldy snow blast

Thursday Sumner Miller and I zipped up to Baldy to take advantage of a season ticket deal thru the Chamber of Commerce, only $49. Sums had the bro connections and got a guest pass. But it was so windy they wouldn’t open. Had us standing in line like penguins for 2 hours before they would open. Rest of the day was pretty damn nice. A bit windy at first, then very still and clear the rest of the day. Good snow, thought pretty choppy in the trees. I hacked. Hiking boots are definitely not suitable for boarding. And yes I did know better. Craigs list here I come for some boots. Sums floated and carved all over, and was a heck of a good tour guide.

Blazed home in little over an hour. Bless the diamond lanes! We cruised past 20 miles of parked cars. Baldy can get quite windy, but if you can get it when it’s still or snowing gently, you will find a wide range of groomed and tree skiing. It’s going to be a heck of a good year for snow.

Scooter Hayes takes to the water

Victoria Skimboards amateur team rider, Scooter Hayes, left the skimboard on the beach but took to the chilly waters of the East Coast during the Holiday Season with good friends on his hand crafted Victoria Skimboards surfboard. Yes we said surfboard.

A little known side benefit of working for Victoria Skimboards is that you get to learn how to shape your own surfboard. Tex is a learned shaper and ready to teach anyone willing to learn. Scooter took his 8′ dreamsicle that he shaped with Tex into the cold waters during New Years and showed the water no mercy.

Congratulations on the friends, the fun, and not sinking on your board Scooter.

Women’s Pro Event

Victoria Skimboards is stoked to host the first Women’s Pro event. Thanks to a compelling DVD called Skim Chicks, which features many of the top women skimboarders, this years Victoria World Championships of Skimboarding will debut the first Women’s Pro division. Gone are the days of going last in degenerating conditions. The men’s Pro division has traditionally taken the best time of day for the conditions. Now, a coin toss will decide who, men or women, has first priority to go when conditions are best. Prize money will be proportional to the number of entrants in each division. All other scheduling traditions will continue. Saturday will begin with the youngest amateur divisions and proceed up thru the age groups. Sunday the order is reversed, so that the youngest kids, our sports most future stars, will go last as the contest finale.
