Cabo 2014 // Day Five // Max Bourne wins

[threecol_one]

On day 5 of the 2014 Cabo Classico, the heat draws were more stacked than Arnold Schwarzenegger in the seventies. Teddy Vlasis made it through his morning house only to lose out in the quarters. The night before, the directors ran six heats in windy conditions that brought down Johnny Salta, Paddy Mack, and Morgan Just. With Teddy Vlasis bowing out in the quarters, Victorias hopes of bringing home a placement rested on Max Bourne’s shoulders.

Max went all the way through the contest, placing first in every preliminary heat before the finals. Max went up against two locals in a tight final heat, but with a handful of solid backside wraps and a driving grab rail barrel, the heat was all but sealed.

Max Bourne will be bringing home the Amateur men’s title, on his birthday trip to Cabo none the less.

We celebrated by bringing Max a gigantic glob of Wasabi which he quickly gobbled up, quickly regretting it.

The 2014 Cabo Classico has been one to remember, and it wouldn’t be possible without the locals for letting us come to these epic beaches, and who graciously share their waves with us.

Diego Barba from X3M Boardshop in Mainland Mexico and the crew from Equilibrium held it down,

organizing and running the contest, and making the calls every morning and evening, putting the riders in the best conditions possible. I can’t wait to come back down here next year, and wouldn’t be surprised if I return before then. Till next year….

Cabo 2014 // Day Four // barrels

[threecol_one]
This morning was the morning of the pros. With the preliminary heats out of the way, the pros took center stage on the second day for the 2014 Cabo Classico. The heats that went down today were just a taste of what we are poised to witness on the final day. With every heat, the competitors were pushing each other to see who would pull into the biggest barrel, or who was going to punt the largest air back on to the dry sand.

Teddy Vlasis pulled into one of the bigger barrels of the morning

while Morgan Just was throwing tech, clinching his heat with a solid wave ten seconds before the horn rang for the end of the heat. Johnny Salta planed way out on his opening wave, wrapping and sole arching all the way to the sand. Johnny has been killing it down here, and a lot of chatter is calling him as the dark horse of the contest.

As always Paddy Mack was skimming with insane power, wrapping his way into round 3.

The afternoons have seen some intense onshore winds, so at this point we are on hold until 5:30 waiting for the contest directors to make a call if we will run or not. In the mean time we are going to relax at the pool and probably dip into the shore break for an all time group body womp session.

Cabo 2014 // Day Two and Three

[threecol_one]

This 2014 edition of the Cabo Classico kept dealing when we woke up and were greeted with pumping waves and glassy conditions. The night before went a little longer than expected so the early morning session was the perfect way to shake off the late night. While the warm crystal clear water gave us the sense of comfort in the heaving shore break, guys were going for broke, throwing themselves over ledges directly onto the sand. The session wrapped up and we decided to walk south and found a solid sider pushing off the rocks with no one around.

The boys traded waves for an hour as we had to pack it up and make it to the riders meeting.

At the riders meeting we found that heats would start running at Solmar this morning at seven AM. The first round of the pros started in classic Cabo shore break, with

all of Victorias’s riders advancing to round 2 tomorrow.

The mornings have been the cleanest so we are expecting another restart bright early Saturday Morning. The word is Cabo sunsets and evening glass offs are something everyone should experience in their lives, and

Cabo 2014 is living up to the hype.

Cabo 2014 // Day One

[threecol_one]

The day started early with a 6:30am flight out of John Wayne Airport, arriving in Cabo around noon. After landing and grabbing the bags, I waited a few hours for the rest of the crew to trickle in. I could sense an elevated mood as warm water heaving barrels and ice cold beer poolside was weighing heavy on everyone’s mind.

After hooking up with Teddy Vlasis, Morgan Just, Max Bourne and Johnny Salta, we grabbed a shuttle into town, watching sets explode on the sand the entire ride.

Being my maiden voyage to Cabo I was skeptical to everyone’s warnings of how heavy the waves get…

I was wrong. The slope at Solmar rivals any Laguna skim spot in its prime, and the five to six foot sets were detonating right on the sand. We also heard from Chimmy and his brother that the Solmar Sider was going off. From outside the hotel we could see guys pulling into death pits on the south side of Solmar next to the rocks, and we didn’t waste any time sprinting down there in hopes of getting a few before dark. We had a solid warm up for the week to come, with

Max Bourne pulling into a healthy connection and getting pitched onto the sand,

Max Bourne Cabo 2014

coming up the slope a little dazed. Writing this I can hear the sets rolling in from my room, and tomorrow looks like the conditions could line up for an epic Solamr Sider session. The riders meeting tomorrow night will also determine if the contest will be held in sidering conditions, or straight wraps.

We will keep you updated.

Victoria’s long time engineer Bob Phillips heart translpant

Bob Phillips heart transplant
Bob Phillips few days before the heart transplant

Last week Bob Phillips finally got that heart he was waiting for. It was an 8.5 hour surgery, and it can run up to 14 hours. So things went well in surgery is my guess.

Unbelievable,  amazing,  and miraculous are the most often heard words about it. This Sunday he was sitting up,  but struggling with the after effects of his massive surgery. He had even been walking the day before that.   Every day will see big improvements, but meanwhile he has to suffer through a very painful recovery and challenging immunosupressing drug regime.

He should be a few more days or a week in intensive care, then he can slide into a less hectic hospital room. Amazing doctors up there at USC Keck Medical Center,  and great staff. Thank you for saving our man Bob. And thank you, thank you whoever out there donated his body to save others.

Keep him in your prayers everybody,

Tex
